As HCA founder Dr. Thomas Frist wisely stated, “Good people beget good people.” At HCA, we know that being in the military is a service to others, and we believe that being in healthcare is a service to others as well. Whether you are a doctor, information technology specialist, nurse or administrative assistant within HCA, you are part of a group of people who spend their careers serving humankind. If you have been in the military, or have a spouse who has been in the military, we know you have spent your life doing the same. That’s why HCA might… Read more.
At HCA, we will honor our veterans and military family members who have given of themselves during both peacetime and conflict throughout November. We currently employ over 37,000 Veterans – a significant portion of our workforce – and we’d like to dedicate this month as our very own HCA Military Appreciation Month. In addition to our enterprise-wide Military Appreciation Month, we will also celebrate Veterans Day on November 11 – a day that has been observed each November since the first anniversary of the end of World War I, when it was known as “Armistice Day.” In fact, Veterans Day,… Read more.
It’s been over 20 years since Andrea Gilley Locher served her country in the U.S. Army Reserve. But she still credits her military service for where she is today – and that’s “Twice the Citizen,” the Army Reserve motto, as an imaging system administrator at HCA’s TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center. In 1987, Locher joined the Reserve before graduating high school. “I knew four years of college wasn’t for me,” she said. “I wanted to figure out what I was going to do, train for it and get out into the workforce.” Whether it was fate or sheer coincidence, Locher chose… Read more.
On this Veterans Day, HCA would like to extend our gratitude to the U.S. military veterans who have honorably served our great country. In particular, we would like to honor all of our colleagues who are military veterans, along with their spouses and families. As we honor our veterans, let’s always remember their service and sacrifice. No matter when someone served or in what capacity, it’s never too late to thank them. A simple, but heartfelt, “thank you for your service” will honor those who selflessly served our country and protected our freedoms. I am proud to share the U.S.… Read more.
Air Force vet opts for a busy hospital ER as the setting for “Career 2.5” After years of flying in F-11, F-4 and F-18 aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, Col. Byron Nash wasn’t quite sure what to do with himself when he landed for the last time. The open days of retirement loomed, and at first he opted to fill them by working in the defense industry. That didn’t last long.
This week (and month) we’re taking some time to focus on those HCA employees who have served our country in the armed forces. We’ve already highlighted how important it is to HCA to hire more veterans – you saw this infographic right? Well, today I want to introduce to one of our leaders in IT&S. Doug Turner joined the Navy right out of high school and spent a majority of his time in the confined space of a U.S. submarine. I get claustrophobic just thinking about it. Today, Doug is the Chief Information Officer for our Physician Services Group. I was curious… Read more.
Veterans Day is a special time for all Americans. It gives us a chance to pause and celebrate those men and women who have made personal sacrifices to protect and preserve the freedom that every citizen holds dear. At HCA we’re proud to have so many veterans who’ve decided to work with us after separating from their military careers. In the last two years alone, we’ve hired more than 4,000 veterans. Every Veterans Day we take time to thank and honor those employees who have served or are currently serving in our armed forces. This year is no exception. During… Read more.

Roque Rodriguez-Urena works at Trident Medical Center in Charleston, S.C. It’s a far cry from his days serving in the U.S. Air Force during the height of the War in Iraq in the early 2000’s. Roque was Shiftleader of Emergency Services while stationed in Iraq and in this episode of HCA Heroes, he shares openly about the impact that serving in a war zone had on him. About one in three returning troops are diagnosed Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). There are a number of ways to treat PTSD and as you’ll see in the video below, Roque has found… Read more.
