Unit of Distinction: Celebrating Excellence in Nursing

They say “there’s no ‘I’ in team,” and for HCA nursing, caring for patients and their families is certainly a dedicated team accomplishment. That’s why we were proud to recognize 21 medical-surgical units with the 2016 Unit of Distinction Awards, celebrating excellence in nursing in leadership, professional practice and operations and outcomes. As the chief nursing executive at HCA, I’m pleased to honor our high-performing team of nurses in med-surge, the largest nursing specialty in the country, who champion the highest quality of care for everyone who enters our facilities. The 21 Unit of Distinction Award winners represent the top… Read more.

Las Vegas PICU Nurse is Called to Care, Adopts Abused Patient

Many of you have heard that nursing is more than a career, it’s a calling. Well, a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) nurse at HCA-affiliate Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas brings a whole new meaning to the phrase. Her name is Kristine Hafner, and her “call to care” resulted in the adoption of one of her patients. The five-year PICU nurse at Sunrise is known to treat her patients like family. So it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows Hafner – an advocate for foster parenting – that she would nurse an abused 11-month… Read more.

Nurses Week 2016

I’ve said it before: there’s never been a better time to be a nurse — and to be an HCA nurse. Everything HCA-affiliated nurses do, whether it’s vetting and implementing new technology, studying for a certification exam, or presenting and interpreting data from nursing dashboards to hospital leaders, is about the patient. Providing the highest quality care for everyone who enters our facilities is not just what we do; it’s who we are. Nursing at HCA continues to evolve, and there are new areas of nursing and advanced practice nursing jobs that were nonexistent or little-known less than a decade… Read more.

Nurse Hailed as Hero after Compassionate Act in Couple’s Final Hours

There are many words used to describe a nurse – A caretaker. An advocate. An educator. And in one family’s case – a hero. Registered nurse Melissa Barajas saw art imitating life, ala “The Notebook”, earlier this year when a married couple died within hours of each other at HCA-affiliate Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. The Texas natives, Edward and Josephine Suarez, had been married for 68 years before a car accident sent them to our Bay Area Houston hospital in critical condition. For roughly four days, Melissa, an ICU nurse, cared for Josephine and provided comfort and support for… Read more.

HCA Nurse Spots Dangerous Health Concern for TV Favorite, Reaches Out to Save Him

Nurses are at the heart of patient care at HCA. They are the face of our organization and the difference-makers in the lives of millions who enter our hospital doors every year…and the lifeline for some who don’t. Ryan Read, a registered nurse at HCA-affiliate Denton Regional Medical Center, potentially saved someone’s life on her day “off”. She had been watching the television show Flip or Flop on HGTV and noticed a lump on the co-hosts’ throat.  Ryan e-mailed the producers of the show and advised the host to seek medical attention. He was checked out and later diagnosed with… Read more.

HCA Chief Nursing Officer Speaks on Nurse Talent, Pride

Earlier this week, two hosts on the television show The View started a firestorm of conversation regarding their remarks about Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson and her monologue during the talent segment of the Miss America pageant.  I’ve been amazed at the surge in nurse pride on social media and throughout the world. As the chief nurse executive and patient safety officer at HCA, one of the world’s leading healthcare systems, I’d like to share my thoughts on the incredible work our 70,000 HCA-affiliated nurses do every day to provide quality care for our patients. Nurse talent is an interesting concept. … Read more.

National Nurses Week is an Appropriate Time for Reflection

National Nurses Week 2015, (May 6-12) is a great time for nurses to take stock of who we are, where we are and where we are going. Personally, I think this is a great time to be a nurse at HCA. The healthcare industry is undergoing significant transformative change and HCA-affiliated nurses have a front row seat. As a nurse at one of the world’s leading healthcare systems, we can both witness and influence change.

Celebrating Certified Nurses Day

Here at HCA we take great pride in the excellent patient care all of our nurses provide every day. Each year on March 19th, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), sponsors this recognition day to honor registered nurses who have demonstrated advanced skill, knowledge, and practice by earning a professional certification in the complex specialties of acute and critical care. So, today, we recognize and support the unique contributions of HCA’s board certified nurses.
